uDeciding to pay attention to my own professional development is a priority this year, now that firmly settled in one location for awhile. I had enrolled in Michael Port's and Mitch Meyerson's 90-Day Product Factory last summer, and got a wealth of valuable info from it. Given how useful I had found that program, it was a no-brainer to enroll in their Traffic School program to help me better optimize my website for the search engines.
Here are some cool (and free!) tools I've already learned about in Traffic School that I'd like to share with you.
First, you'll want to have your website analyzed. The Web Page Analyzer acts as a search engine robot and displays how a search engine would interpret your web page. The Web Page Analyzer checks your meta tags in addition to your web page content, and will offer advice to improve each. It will also display the keyword density of your web page. Then, check out your Alexa page rank. Alexa has built a database of information about sites that include statistics, related links and more. Find out where you site ranks on the world wide web here: http://www.alexa.com/# Note: the lower your number, the better your site is ranked.
Now check out your Google PageRank. Google PageRank is one of the methods Google uses to determine a page?s relevance or importance. It is only one part of the story when it comes to your Google listing but it's important to know. To find out your Google PageRank (as well as everybody else's) install the Google Toolbar on your browser by going to: http://toolbar.google.com.
Lastly, determine your link popularity, or number of inbound links to your site on the major search engines. Link popularity is a very good way to measure your website's online visibility and overall Web presence. It is ascertained by the number of web sites that link to your web site and is an important factor in gauging your site's importance, increasing your site traffic and determining your web site's ranking in major search engines like Google, HotBot, AltaVista, MSN, and Inktomi.
Use the following search terms to find pages the link to your sites or your competitors' sites.
Yahoo: Go to www.yahoo.com and in the search box type in linkdomain:url.com (example linkdomain:onlinebizcoachingcompany.com) or link:http://www.url.com/page.htm (example link:http://www.onlinebizcoachingcompany.com/index.htm) to check your number of inbound links.
Start keeping a record of your stats, and make it a goal to improve your website!
